Who We Are

Home isn’t where you are from, it’s where you find light when it grows dark. Our home is where our Guruji resides – in our Yogashala at Samatra BKS Iyengar Yogashala. Guruji is our guiding light, dispelling all darkness through the practice of yoga. He has taught us and left a rich legacy for us to uphold and follow.

At Samatra, our vision is to continue Guruji’s teachings by imparting the knowledge of yoga to our students. For us, our Yogashala is a little temple where we strive to instill and share what we have learned from our Guruji.

Our Yogashala’s mission is to give back to our Guruji what we have received from him unconditionally – to teach yoga as taught by him in the purest form of Iyengar Yoga traditions, ensuring that we follow the tenets of his teachings and practice.

Our Yogashala was established on the 4th of July 2023 with the blessings of Guruji, with a principal aim of imparting yoga at the highest level. Since then, we have been offering yoga training to our students through in-person, online, and hybrid classes.

While many yoga schools focus on the physical aspect of the self, it’s important to remember that the word “yoga” is derived from the Sanskrit root yuj, meaning “to yoke” or “to unite.” The practice of yoga aims to create union between body, mind, and spirit, as well as between the individual self and universal consciousness. This union neutralizes ego-driven thoughts and behaviors, fostering spiritual awakening.

It is through the unification of the body and mind, catalyzed by breath, that we achieve a state of neutrality, which is essential for our daily existence. Iyengar Yoga is the path that unifies body, mind, and breath. This unique form of yoga was taught by Guruji.

Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras provide the traditional foundation of yoga, outlining an eightfold path known as the ‘Eight Limbs of Yoga.’ This path guides those who are dedicated to creating union between body, mind, and spirit.

At Samatra, we live and breathe yoga, focusing on the dynamic interaction of body, mind, and breath. We follow a style of yoga that emphasizes alignment, precision, and sequencing of asanas for the optimal effect on the body, mind, and self. This approach is unique to Iyengar Yoga and is not found in other forms of yoga.

At Samatra, we adhere to the strict guidelines set by our parent body, the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI), to ensure that the teaching methodology remains consistent across the 70 countries where Iyengar Yoga is practiced.

Welcome to Samatra BKS Iyengar Yogashala, where we believe in Atha Yoga Anushasanam – “Now, the teachings of yoga begin.”

“Atha” is a Sanskrit word that can be translated as “now” or “in the present moment,” indicating that this text is meant to be studied and practiced here and now. “Atha” emphasizes living in the present, not dwelling in the past or wandering in the future. “Anushasanam” means “teaching” or “instruction,” underscoring the practical and instructional nature of asanas. Therefore, Atha Yoga Anushasanam can be understood as an invitation to explore and engage with the teachings of yoga, knowing that it is a practice to be pursued and realized in the present moment.

In Samatra’s parlance, this means: “Join us now.”
